Bottom line, most brainstorming sessions don&#8217;t work. Not because  brainstorming, as a process, doesn&#8217;t work &#8211; but because it&#8217;s usually  done poorly.<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-1784\" title=\"Blog - Brainstorming\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tsirigosorbit.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/Blog-Brainstorming-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Blog - Brainstorming\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/p>\n<p>What follows are the 26 most common reasons why &#8211;  and after that, a list of what you can do differently to turn things  around.<\/p>\n<p>26 REASONS BRAINSTORMING SESSIONS FAIL<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Poor  facilitation<\/li>\n<li>Wrong (or poorly articulated) topic<\/li>\n<li>Unmotivated  participants<\/li>\n<li>Insufficient diversity of participants<\/li>\n<li>Inadequate  orientation<\/li>\n<li>No transition from &#8220;business as usual&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Lack  of clear ground rules<\/li>\n<li>Sterile meeting space<\/li>\n<li>Hidden  (or competing) agendas<\/li>\n<li>Lack of robust participation<!--more--><\/li>\n<li>Insufficient  listening<\/li>\n<li>Habitual idea killing behavior<\/li>\n<li>Attachment  to old (&#8220;pet&#8221;) ideas<\/li>\n<li>Discomfort with ambiguity<\/li>\n<li>Hyper-seriousness  (not enough fun)<\/li>\n<li>Endless interruptions<\/li>\n<li>PDA  addiction (Crackberries)<\/li>\n<li>Impatience (premature adoption of  the first &#8220;right idea&#8221;)<\/li>\n<li>Group think<\/li>\n<li>Hierarchy  and\/or competing sub-groups<\/li>\n<li>Imbalance of divergent and  convergent thinking<\/li>\n<li>No tools and techniques to spark the  imagination<\/li>\n<li>Inelegant ways of capturing new ideas<\/li>\n<li>No  time for personal reflection<\/li>\n<li>Pre-mature evaluation<\/li>\n<li>No  follow-up plan<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>WHAT CAN YOU DO TO TURN THINGS AROUND?<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Find,  train (or hire) a skillful facilitator<\/li>\n<li>Make sure you&#8217;re  focusing on the right challenge.<\/li>\n<li>Invite people who really  care about the topic.<\/li>\n<li>Invite people with diverse points of  view.<\/li>\n<li>Spend time clarifying the &#8220;current reality&#8221;.Start  with a fun icebreaker to help change mindset.<\/li>\n<li>Ask  participants to establish clear meeting ground rules.<\/li>\n<li>Design  (or find) a more inspiring meeting space.<\/li>\n<li>Establish  alignment re: session goals.<\/li>\n<li>Find ways to engage the least  verbal participants.<\/li>\n<li>Establish &#8220;deep listening&#8221; as a ground  rule. Model it.<\/li>\n<li>Invite participants to name classic idea  killing statements.<\/li>\n<li>Elicit the group&#8217;s pet ideas in the  first 30 minutes.<\/li>\n<li>Explain how ambiguity is part of the  ideation process.<\/li>\n<li>Tell stories, play music, invite humor.<\/li>\n<li>Go  offsite. Put a &#8220;meeting in progress&#8221; sign on the door.<\/li>\n<li>Collect  all PDAs\/cell phones. Establish &#8220;no email&#8221; ground rule.<\/li>\n<li>Go  for a quantity of ideas. Let go of perfectionism.<\/li>\n<li>Encourage  individuality, risk taking, and wild ideas.<\/li>\n<li>Ask people to  leave their titles at the door.<\/li>\n<li>Start with divergent  thinking.
